How to Roleplay Empty

This forum is turn-based roleplaying. This means you take turns to write posts, everything is written in story-format, and no dice rolling or Random Number Generators are used. Veritaserum is one giant roleplay. You don't have to interact with everyone, but try not to ignore people either.

Here is an example of a post:

Quote :
Cameron settled himself down in the armchair closest to the crackling fireplace. He relaxed in comfort and allowed his eyes to scan the Griffindor common room. A group of three first-year students were huddled around a small table in the corner of the room discussing something in hushed tones. A seventh-year student sat leaning cross-legged against the opposite wall reading 'A History of Magic', and Mia and Dylan were playing a loud game of Wizard's Chess in the middle of the floor. Cameron pulled out a pack of Exploding Snap cards from his pocket and began to shuffle them absent-mindedly. With a loud bang, cards flew spontaneously from his hand and scattered themselves around the room. The King of Hearts landed on the chess board between Mia and Dylan, so Cameron heaved himself out of the chair and walked towards the couple. He gave them an apologetic smile.

You cannot God-Mod or Power-Play, which means that your character cannot know everything, nor what other characters are thinking, and has weaknesses. This also means that you, as a poster, cannot take control of someone else's character. However, you can control what a Non-Playable Character (NPC) does.

An NPC is a character that no other user has created, and you may post a small description of for mild interaction. Other users are allowed to control an NPC that you invent, but they must not have major roles in the story. For example, the group of first-years and the reading seventh-year in the above example are NPCs. Mia and Dylan are examples of characters that other users own. Mia and Dylan were already playing chess on the floor when Cameron walked in. Cameron's player did not decide what Mia and Dylan were doing, because they were already said to be doing it by the other players.

And example of God-Modding posts are the following:

Quote :
Cameron bent down to retrieve his card from the chess table, and turned to walk back to his chair.
"Wait," Mia said. "Do you want to join us? We're almost done our game, and we could put your cards to good use."
"Excellent idea!" Dylan grinned.
"Sure, why not?" Replied Cameron. He knew that Mia was amazing at Exploding Snap, and that Dylan was about to state that he was better any second now.

Joe ran up the staircase away from Sarah. The staircase changed to another floor beneath his feet. He leapt and grabbed it in time, but it had swung too far for Sarah to jump behind him.

How do you know that Sarah can't jump that far? Maybe she's really good at jumping, or found another way to follow you.

As you have probably noticed, this forum is split into different locations. Your character can be in one locations doing an activity, then walk to another location and continue his/her actions there, or start a new activity. Your character cannot be in two places at once, so if he/she is in the Griffindor common room, he/she cannot interact with people in the Great Hall. An example of a character leaving and entering a room follows:

Quote :
...Cameron raised his arms to the heavens in an almighty stretch, and as if on cue, his stomach gave an unpleasant growl of hunger. He lowered his arms to gaze at his watch, glad to see that dinner was soon to be served in the Great Hall.
"Hunger calls, lady and gent." he said to Mia and Dylan. "Meet me in the Great Hall if you're hungry later." He smiled and headed towards the tapestry of the Fat Lady, pushed it with the palm of his hand, and exited the room.

[You would now start a new or join an existing thread in the 'Great Hall' section.]

The smell of roast lamb and mashed potatoes hit Cameron with such force. He grinned as he walked through the large doors that let him gain access to the food beautifully laid out on the four house tables in front of him. His legs carried him quickly, as though controlling themselves, to a seat at the Griffindor table. He looked around him to see those around him, before loading his plate with the dinner that he so craved.
